Flag Day Ceremony Scheduled for Town Hall on June 15

Release Date: June 08, 2009

FLAG DAY CEREMONY SCHEDULED AT TOWN HALL MONDAY, JUNE 15

Andrew J. Zarutskie, Town Clerk of the Town of Newburgh, has announced that a Flag Day ceremony will take place at Town Hall on Monday, June 15, at 11:00 a.m.

Zarutskie said that June 14 is traditionally Flag Day, but the ceremony is being conducted on the 15th because the 14th falls on a Sunday this year.

The ceremony is being held because Anthony Buccieri, a long time veterans activist and resident of the Town of Newburgh, again stepped forward this year and volunteered to conduct the ceremony.

Buccieri, a World War II veteran, along with Zarutskie has long contended that Flag Day is the “forgotten holiday” in America, and annually helps to remind Newburgh area residents of the history of our flag and what it stands for.

In the past, Buccieri set up at Town Hall a display of the various configurations of “Old Glory” throughout the years, which included samples of some of the historic flags which preceded the Stars and Stripes, which was adopted as the official flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

Buccieri has extended an invitation to all of the veterans organizations in the area to participate.

Zarutskie said that the ceremony would be held in front of Town Hall, 1496 Route 300, weather permitting, and will be moved inside to the meeting room if the weather is inclement.

For his part, Zarutskie notes that when he was a child Flag Day was considered a “big deal”, with assemblies and ceremonies in the schools.  Every newspaper and publication in those days printed notices urging the people to display Old Glory.  Now, he says, “even our major national periodicals, such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, allow Flag Day to go by year after year without even a passing mention.  We want to take steps to make certain the people of the Town of Newburgh do not forget.”
